Geocache Description:

Saltskog, station, gård and residential area.

Back in 2013 up to 2018 I had a serie caches with some background information about Saltskog gård. In the meantime the area had a great series Saltskog hidden by Telgetokarna, thanks for leaving some space for a new serie!
Now in 2025 it is time for a new serie in the area and this time some background about the former station and railway (currently Nyköpingsvägen)

Södertelge öfre (occasionally also named Södertelge, Öfre Telge and Saltskog) was formerly the main railway station for long-distance trains in Södertälje in Södermanland and Stockholm County.

Due to Södertälje's hilly topography, as well as the fact that the city is divided by a canal, it has been difficult to build good rail connections. Despite this, Södertälje is one of the largest railway junctions in Sweden. When the railway to Södertälje was built, it was decided that the main line would not run through the then immediate city centre. This meant, among other things, that the area of Mariekälla, south of Järnatullen, quickly received a detailed plan with mainly residential buildings.

The railway station in Södertälje became Södertelge öfre, which has sometimes also been called Öfre Telge. Initially, however, it was only called "Södertelge", which caused some confusion, as the station at that time was well outside the city. It was all resolved through the name change to Södertälje upper. The central station was named Södertelge nedre. In 1887, the station's name was changed once again, and Södertelge upper was named Saltskog. Södertelge lower name was changed to only "Södertelje" in 1888, and then to Södertälje Central in 1926. Both railway stations were inaugurated in October 1860, at the same time as the railway to Stockholm. The railway, which was to become the Western Main Line, was then drawn further south towards Katrineholm and Gothenburg. In 1895, the railway was inaugurated through northern Sörmland (Norra Södermanlands Järnväg, NrSlJ), which meant that Södertälje also got a railway connection with Eskilstuna. Södertelge upper had originally only a simple wooden station house and two platforms. A more modern stone station building was built in 1885.

In October 1921, the Södertälje södra station was inaugurated in connection with the railway getting a new double-track route through the city. Södertälje södra replaced the old railway station in Saltskog, whose station building was demolished in 1947 or possibly earlier. The red building that remains on the site today is the former Stinshuset.

All trains on the Western Main Line of the Swedish State Railways and the trains on the Northern Södermanland Railway passed the station. There were also a couple of connecting smaller tracks. Travelers to Södertälje lower/central/center changed to local trains. There was also a connecting track that was mainly used for the transport of goods and workers to the port areas next to Södertelge outport station.

The caches are all starting at the former station area with an easy jigsaw puzzle, partly historic pictures and partially my own pictures from the area.
Let’s hope you can enjoy this serie.

(It could have been a serie of easter eggs but in this case it are just easter tubes.)  Saltskog 2025 01
