Tasks:

1. What fossils or organic remains can you discover on site?

2. The same fossils often occur multiple times in certain locations. Why might this be?

3. Can you identify any other striking structures? Describe them.

Send me the answers to the questions to "silka03.earthcache@gmail.com." Not in your log!!!

You can log immediately after your answer. You don't need to wait for the log to be approved!

Have fun!

What is a fossil?

A fossil is a mineralized remnant (such as a shell, bone, teeth, seeds, leaves, spores, pollen, plankton, or microorganisms) or a simple imprint of an animal or plant preserved in a sedimentary rock.

Sedimentary rocks are true geological archives, as the numerous fossils they contain make it possible to reconstruct ancient landscapes and identify the species that existed during different periods.

Fossils and Biogenic Sedimentary Rocks

Fossils are characteristic of sedimentary rocks (or metamorphic rocks if the protolith (non-metamorphic rock from which a metamorphic rock is formed) is a sedimentary rock). If the proportion of elements in the sedimentary rock that come from living organisms is high (more than 50%), they are called biogenic rocks. Examples include Urgonian limestone (rudists) and Lumachellae of the Maastrichtian Lias (shells and corals).

From Fossil to Crystal

Over the course of its geological history, the fossil-bearing elements of a limestone can disappear, leaving behind cavities that fill with water-rich ions. These ions eventually settle and form a recrystallization of calcite within this space, which takes on the shape of the earlier fossil, resulting in "fossils" of calcite crystals.

What fossils can you find here?

Here are some examples of fossils we can find in limestone. You might spot some during your visit.

1. Ammonite

Ammonites are extinct cephalopods from the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods that are close relatives of squid.

Characteristics: They had a spiral-shaped, often ornamented shell divided into chambers. These chambers allowed them to float in the water.
Habitat: They lived in various marine environments, from shallow coasts to deep oceans.
Fossil description: The shells are often well-preserved and show complex, geometric patterns. They are commonly found in limestone and shale.

2. Belemnite

Belemnites were also cephalopods and lived contemporaneously with ammonites. They had a torpedo-like shape.

Characteristics: Belemnites possessed a cylindrical, bone-like shell (belemnite tube), which is often preserved as a fossil.
Habitat: They inhabited open seas.
Fossil Description: Fossils often consist of tube-like shell fragments that taper to a point and are commonly found in marine sedimentary rocks.

3. Coral

Corals are sessile animals that live in reefs and belong to the class Anthozoa.

Characteristics: Corals form calcitic skeletons that are often branched or stem-like. These skeletons form the structure of coral reefs.
Habitat: They grow in warm, shallow seas and form reefs.
Fossil Description: Coral fossils often show branched or colony-like structures and are commonly found in limestone.

4. Mussel

Mussels are mollusks known for their two symmetrical shells.

Characteristics: Mussels have a bivalve shell made of calcium carbonate and are often rounded or oval.
Habitat: They live in sandy or muddy bottoms in coastal areas, rivers, and lakes.
Fossil description: Shell fossils consist of fossilized shells and are often found in sedimentary rocks such as sandstone or limestone.
