Chlorite is a mineral group that often occurs in metamorphic rocks and is known for its characteristic green color. This color is due to the high iron and magnesium content in the crystal structure of chlorite minerals. The name “chlorite” comes from the Greek (“chloros” - green), which reflects the typical appearance of this mineral. In this Earthcache you will learn more about the geological formation of chlorite, its color effect and its significance in rocks.
Geology and formation:
Chlorite is mainly formed by the metamorphosis of silicate rocks under low to medium temperature and pressure conditions. It is formed particularly frequently through the transformation of biotite and other dark mica minerals during regional metamorphism. Chlorite is mainly found in schists, phyllites and metabasites. It also occurs in hydrothermally altered rocks and can occur as an alteration product in basic and ultrabasic rocks.
Color effect of chlorite:
The green color of chlorite is caused by the high content of iron (Fe) and magnesium (Mg). Chlorite can produce different shades of green in different rocks:
- Pale green to gray-green in schists and phyllites
- Deep green in metabasites (e.g. green schist)
- Dark green in serpentinites or ultrabasic rocks
The exact color shade depends on the chemical composition of the chlorite as well as on accompanying minerals. Chlorite can also occur with epidote and serpentine, which also contribute to the green coloration.
