Petts Wood was bombed many times during the second World War. Some bombs would have been aimed at the Thornet Wood Heavy Anti-Aircraft battery located in what is now Jubilee Park, others fell short of Biggin Hill airfield, and some will have been released on the way back to Germany after London bombing raids.

Up to 7 high explosive bombs fell onto Crofton and Sparrow Woods during night-time raids between October 1940 and June 1941. This cache is hidden on the Circular Trail, near to the site of a pond (at coordinates N51 22.944 E00 03.638), formed in a crater caused by one of the bombs. In summer the pond will dry up.
Permission for cache placement in the SSSI has been obtained from Natural England and the Senior Ranger and Site manager.
