Tasks:
1. What minerals are visible and how large are the crystals?
2. Is there a recognizable banding or layering of the rock? If so, what does it look like?
3. Is this granite or gneiss? How can you tell? Give reasons.
4. Take a picture of yourself or a piece of paper with your name on site without completely giving spoilers.

Granite and gneiss are two different magmatic rocks that differ in their formation and physical properties:
1. granite:
Formation: Granite is a magmatic deep rock that is formed at great depths below the earth's surface from slowly cooling and solidifying magma. During the slow cooling process, the minerals have time to form large crystals. This slow cooling typically takes place in plutons or magma chambers within the earth's crust.
Composition: Granite consists mainly of three main minerals:
- Quartz: A hard, transparent to milky mineral.
- Feldspar: Usually visible as pink or cream-colored crystals. Feldspar can be divided into two main types: Orthoclase (potassium feldspar) and plagioclase.
- Mica: Mica minerals such as biotite (black) or muscovite (silver-colored) are often visible and give the granite its shiny surface.
Characteristics: Granite has a coarse crystalline structure, which means that the crystals of the minerals it contains are visible to the naked eye. Typical colors are grey, pink, red and white. Granite is very popular as a building material and for sculptures due to its hardness and durability.
2. gneiss:
Formation: gneiss is a metamorphic rock formed by the transformation of pre-existing rock (such as granite, but also other igneous or sedimentary rocks) under high pressure and temperature. This transformation process is known as metamorphosis. The minerals of the original rock are rearranged and can form new mineral phases.
Composition: Gneiss typically consists of similar minerals to granite, but in a different structure:
- Quartz: As in granite.
- Feldspar: Also present, but may occur in different colors.
- Mica: May also be present, but often in smaller quantities.
Characteristics: The most striking feature of gneiss is the distinct banding or layering caused by metamorphism. This banding is caused by the regrouping and redistribution of minerals, resulting in a striking layering. Gneiss can have different colors and textures, but banding is always a characteristic feature.
