This cache is a part of my “River Nile” series, (if you want THAT to make sense, you need to read the description for “Sauce of the Nile” [GCB2PFQ].
There will be a Bonus Cache associated with this series. The information needed to locate the cache can be found on the logs of selected caches on the Oran Park side of Camden Valley Way. This section of the series is still being completed.
Unfortunately, not all of South Creek has features that reflect something significant about the River Nile. So some caches are a little more “generic” than others. These are named for a colour variation of blue (as this one is … ie, part of the Blue Nile) or white, or of a significant pharaoh in the history of Egypt. A couple are named for some other natural feature associated with that river.
While the origin of the White Nile (being the longer, and therefore the one considered when reckoning “the source of the Nile”) remained a mystery until 1858, Lake Tana in Ethiopia was discovered as the source of the Blue Nile in 1618 by Spanish Jesuit explorer, Pedro Paez.
I refer to Howard Park as Luna Park due to its ultra-colourful presentation, when seen at ground level and also on satellite view. It’s something of a “Super Park”, with several separate play areas, taking both younger and older children into account. A couple of years back I noted it included in a list of “The Best Playgrounds in Sydney”, and it often seems to be well-patronised. Personally, I was impressed at the way slippery-dips (old guy language for “slides”) have been built into the slopes of artificial “hills”, meaning that there is no fall through the air with a sickening crunch at the end if someone loses their footing and comes off the thing. Bonus is that it’s good exercise getting to the top.
Extensive (and colourful) sun shades are another excellent feature, and there’s also a good-sized sand pit for the littlies.
SEARCHERS' NOTE ... Please DO NOT access GZ adjacent to pillar with green transformer boxes next to it (see photo). Enter area off footpath adjacent to NEXT PILLAR further along from creek, and approach GZ from rear. The branch next to this one is easily held aside to permit entry.
