Old Fort St. Vrain was built by the Bent, St. Vrain Trading Co. in 1837. It was first used as a fur trade post along the South Platte river from 1837 to 1846. After the site gained fame through the Topographical Reports of John Fremonts first two explorations in 1842 and 1843 it was a stopover for travellers on a north-south route between the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail, a jumping-off place for Colorado's gold-rushers in 1858 and 1859. It was the first county seat of Weld County beginning in 1861. In the 20th Century, the site was all but forgotten. An interesting book about this Fort is written by Diane Brotemarkle, it's called Old Fort St. Vrain. To log this cache you need to find the cache container and e-mail us the code word enclosed. Please do not post the answer here even if encrypted. The last 3/8 of a mile is public access thru a farm yard with a 5mph. speed limit, please observe. Could be a tough find with snow on the ground!
