Have you ever wanted to see something big get blown up?
Update: the implosion has been postponed until May 10th or May 11th. I will update further when I know more.
The end is nigh for the Sheraton Crossroads hotel in Mahwah, NJ. Located at the border of New York and New Jersey, the 250 foot tower has been a 40 year landmark for anyone passing by on the nearby highways. It was often referred to as the "Superman" building, for the big "S" at the top. Sadly though, the hotel has reached the end of its life and will be demolished by implosion. 1,700 dynamite holes will be drilled, and the entire event is expected to be over in less than 30 seconds.
The destruction is scheduled for between 7:30 am and 9:00 am. I will post more later if an exact time is provided. It will happen rain or shine.
Please join us at a nearby viewpoint to celebrate the passing of the hotel. The elevated scenic view is on the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail heading into Harriman State Park. We will be safely far enough away but still be able to see everything. Parking and trailhead coordinates are provided. Free parking can be found at the Suffern train station on the weekend. From there, briefly walk northwest on Rt 59, underneath the highway. The trail head will be on the right, directly across from the Welcome To Suffern sign. You will be following yellow trail markers. The hike is short, but it is a strenuous climb up the mountain side, so please wear appropriate footware. Plan on 45-60 minutes to get to the viewpoint, depending on your hiking level. We will all be back before breakfast.
