Airport-area caches are popular with those with some spare time before a flight, so I thought I'd look to place a few more.
Back when Russley Road was still a two lane road, and there was a roundabout at the Russley / Memorial intersection, you could drive down Avonhead Road from the city, cross Russley Road (having given way to Russley Road traffic), and carry on all the way to Grays Road. The crossing was closed in 2012 or 2013 as part of a years long project to 4-lane Russley Road. Today, Avonhead Rd West of Russley Road is no longer open to traffic. The dead-end road from Ron Guthrey Rd that ends just before Russley Road was closed to traffic in late 2025 or early 2026. The section beyond Ron Guthrey Rd and Grays Road was closed years before as part of commercial development of the area.
The cache is a magnetic eclipse tin, attached to a road sign socket that (at present) has no road sign attached. There are two sockets; the cache is on the one farthest from the road. Before the road was shut off there was good parking not far from the cache (at the Wairakei Rd dead-end), but with that section of Wairakei Rd closed off there is no nearby parking.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PARK ON RUSSLEY ROAD!!!!
