Geocache Description:

This cache is not at the posted coordinates. If you look for it there, you might find yourself in the path of an oncoming train, and that's no good. Much better to be riding it!

Also, please be aware that Bennett Place Historic Site occasionally has special events and requests an admission charge of $5 for adults (13-64) and $2 for children and seniors.

Otherwise the site is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9am-5pm. The grounds are closed Sunday, Monday, and designated state holidays.

Admission is free on non-event days, but for a very small fee (staff and weather permitting) you can join-in on a historian-guided tour to discover a wealth of fascinating information.

But just to complete this Adventure Lab, grab yourself a pamphlet and wander around the grounds for a self-guided tour. Whatever you choose, a visit here is always worthwhile.

Welcome to the site of the largest troop surrender of the American Civil War. At this location, Generals William T. Sherman (USA) and Joseph E. Johnston (CSA) met here three times in April 1865 to negotiate the surrender of almost 90,000 Confederate troops, which resulted in the end of the war.

Visit the different stops in the corresponding Adventure Lab to learn more about these historic negotiations and the significant impact the end of the war had on the course of the nation.

While you're here, be sure to check out the Virtual Cache 'Surrender Location' (GCG8T7) established by WE4NCS all the way back in 2003. Incidentally, this was the very first Virtual I ever logged so it holds a special place for me.

Also, the nature trails here are well worth a meander, especially if you want to pick-up a traditional called 'Confederate Cache' (GCYQ52) that's been hiding here since 2006.

Taken from a 'Civil Wars Trails' publication:

On April 17, 1865, Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and Union Gen. William T. Sherman met under a flag of truce midway between their lines on Hillsborough Road, seven miles west of Durham Station, to discuss surrender terms. Johnston suggested that they use this nearby farmhouse -- the home of James and Nancy Bennett -- for privacy.

Inside the Bennett House, Sherman informed Johnston of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Uncertain of the consequences of this murder, the generals began negotiations, with Sherman offering terms similar to those that Gen. Ulysses S. Grant had given Gen. Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9. Johnston countered with a plan for "a permanent peace," including political terms. At their second meeting on April 18, Sherman submitted a "basis for agreement": disbanding remaining Confederate armies, recognizing existing state governments, establishing federal courts, restoring political and civil rights to former Confederates, and a general amnesty. Confederate President Jefferson Davis approved the agreement, but U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton rejected it summarily. U.S. general-in-chief Grant ordered Sherman to meet again with Johnston and offer him the Appomattox terms.

On April 26, Sherman and Johnson met here for the last time, and Johnston accepted the terms, surrendering the armies under his command including those in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida -- some 89,270 Confederates. It was the largest surrender of troops in the war.
