Te Pūrākau o te Wahine ngaro i te Ngahere
(The Story of the Woman Lost in the Forest)

Long ago, in the time of our Tipuna, there lived a rangatira (chief) whose daughter was renowned throughout the iwi for her beauty, wisdom, and strength of spirit. She was a wahine toa, and her name was Hinearoha.

Two tāne, each brave and noble, sought her hand in marriage. One hailed from the misty shores of Tarawera, where the lake whispered secrets to the sky. The other lived beneath the sacred mountain of Ngongotahā, where legends say the patupaiarehe — the fairy people — still roam under cover of cloud.

Though both men stirred her heart, Hinearoha could not choose between them. The weight of her decision pressed heavy on her spirit. So, guided by the wisdom of Papatūānuku (Earth Mother), she went into the ngahere — the great forest — and hid among the towering rimu and ancient tōtara.

She chose a place deep within, precisely between Tarawera and Ngongotahā, where the birds sing clearly and the wind carries no favour.

Before she vanished beneath the ferns, she declared:

"Ko te tāne tuatahi ka kitea ahau, ko ia hei hoa mōku."
("The first man to find me shall be the one I marry.")

To this day, some say her wairua (spirit) still lingers in that sacred place, where the trees have long memories.

Perhaps, if you walk the old forest trails with open eyes and a willing heart, you may discover a tohu — a sign left by Hinearoha — revealing who reached her first.

Ngā mihi nui, kia ū ki te ara tika.
(Good luck, and may you stay true to the path.)
