Any series about been based in Saskatchewan would be remiss if it did not tell the story of the Great West Brewery. The brewery on 2nd Avenue in Saskatoon was built in 1927, operating as the Hub City Brewing Company. It was acquired by O’Keefe in 1956 and operated under its auspices until 1989. In that year all of the employees were invited to a meeting where they were told that an upcoming merger of Carling and Molson would result in the closure of the brewery and the loss of 40 jobs. A group of 16 determined employees got together and pooled their resources to found The Great West Brewing Company and it has been a local success story ever since.
They brew a limited line of products including the original pale ale, a copper ale, an extra light, a prairie white and a non-alcoholic beer. Copper is my favourite and will undoubtedly have been sampled by a number of cachers who make this find.
