Town name: Carland
Population: 50
Reason for becoming a lost town: The lumber ran out and Carland lost out to nearby towns for business and schooling.
Town history: After being proposed in the mid 1870's, the Owosso & Big Rapids Railroad finally made its way thru that part of the county in 1884. By now it was called the Toledo, Ann Arbor & Northern Michigan Railroad and with it, Carland was born.
Carland began as a station on the Toledo, Ann Arbor & Northern Railroad in 1884 and was named after one of the officials by the name of Carland. Given a post office on December 3, 1884, with Ezra Lattimer as the first postmaster. The post office was kept open into the mid 1900s in a home. The Methodist church is still going and the school still stands, but is now abandoned. The grain elevator still stands and let's people know that Carland is still here.
