This was another “situational beer”. I took my last work-related trip to Santa Rosa, CA which is most famously known for its Charles Schultz Museum. On the recommendation of a friend at home, I sought out the Russian River Brewing Company where I hoped they would be telecasting Game 6 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals. It was within walking distance of my hotel and when I pulled up a stool at the bar I introduced myself as a Canuck and kindly asked if they would be airing the hockey game that evening and he said they could certainly do that for his new-found Canadian friend. I asked him for his recommendation for an ale and he said it had to be Blind Pig since that was the name of their first brewery. I asked “why blind pig” and he explained that it is a prohibition-era term for a speakeasy.
For those who remember this series, Edmonton had fallen behind 3-0 only to win the next two games. They came out on fire in Game 6 and ended up skating to a 5-1 win which set up a historic Game 7 that the Oilers unfortunately lost. I may, or may not, have drank as many Blind Pigs as goals the Oilers scored in that game, but only Kevin the bartender knows for sure and he’s not telling.
