The Czechs have consumed the most beer per capita in the world for 29 years running and thus take great pride in and love their beer. This is the original Budweiser and Budvar has been in a trademark dispute with Anheuser-Busch for use of the name Budweiser since the early 20th century. In 1939, only one week before the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, Budweiser Budvar agreed to concede exclusive rights to the American brewery in the US area. The dispute continued through WWII and the Cold War and in 1994 the CEO of Budweiser Budvar decided not to sign a trademark agreement with the Americans to divide their territory across the world. As a result, Budweiser Budvar is exported as Czechvar outside of the European Union, and Anheuser-Busch sells its beer as Bud in most of Europe.
The brewery is based in Ceske Budejovice and when I was on a group bike trip in 2023 we were approaching Ceske Budejovice (or Cesky Beetlejuice as we named it) when I had a wee bit of a mishap. As I was getting stitched up in the very efficient Czech hospital, my friends were experiencing Budvar for the first time and it quickly became the tipple of choice for the rest of the trip.
