Geocache Description:


In honour of the WW1 soldiers named on the Keyworth Memorial on Nottingham Road - the 3 new housing estates  Spinners Croft, Keyworth Rise, and Nicker Hill all take their street names from the soldiers who gave thier lives in World War One.  These caches are placed in honour of their memories - they are all local to Keyworth in some way.  Many of these families were long established in the small community of Keyworth (787 total population made up of  372 males and 415 female - as in 1911 census summary books). 

Henry Marriott -  Henry known as Harry, was  born in 1890 at Keyworth and was the son of Arthur & Jane Marriott (nee Disney)  Arthur was born in 1861 at Keyworth and died in 1907 aged 46 yrs, Jane Disney was born in 1864 at Keyworth they were married in 1883. His siblings were Evangeline, Annie, Charlotte, Beatrice, Arthur William, Herbert,  Lucy and Doris all Keyworth born.   Henry was the brother of Annie Marriott wife of ARNOLD DISNEY.

His Fathers parents were John & Rebecca Marriott (nee Henson ). His Mothers parents were Samuel & Emily Disney (nee Dring).  

In 1891 The family were living in Blind Lane off the main square in Keyworth, Henry aged 1.  By 1901 they had moved to Old Lane (Elm Ave),  Henry aged 11, and were still there in 1911 (his mother now a widow) Henry aged 21 years. Henry was an ironmonger's assistant, working at Pearson Bros in Nottingham.

His brother Arthur William served in the 2nd Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters and survived.

Henry Marriott - Private  36390 enlisted at Derby 17th November 1915 and joined the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) serving with 'D' Company but at the time of his death he was with the 11th Battalion.   He died of wounds on 1st July 1917 aged 27 years  in Manchester Military Hospital and is buried at Keyworth (St Mary Magdalene) Churchyard, the only Keyworth wartime fatality to be brought home for burial. An annual grant from the Wargraves Commission pays for its upkeep. See photo of grave.  He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Marriott Close is named in his honour at the new housing estate at Spinners Croft on Station Road/Platt Lane, Keyworth.
