Geocache Description:


In honour of the WW1 soldiers named on the Keyworth Memorial on Nottingham Road - the 3 new housing estates  Spinners Croft, Keyworth Rise, and Nicker Hill all take their street names from the soldiers who gave thier lives in World War One.  These caches are placed in honour of their memories - they are all local to Keyworth in some way.  Many of these families were long established in the small community of Keyworth (787 total population made up of  372 males and 415 female - as in 1911 census summary books). 

Isaac Orme  was born in 1893 at Bulwell, Nottingham, the son of  Henry & Ruth Orme (nee Knight).  They were married in 1873 at Bulwell and had 10 children.  Ruth died in 1904 and Henry remarried Kate Bell in 1905. Isaac's siblings were Mary Jane, Fredk, Bertha, Percy, Ada, Amelia, Will, Harold and Leah. His Fathers parents were Isaac & Ellen Orme (nee Newbutt).  His Mothers parents were Samuel & Hannah Knight (nee Baker).

The family are found in the census of Bulwell until 1911 where Henry (aged 56) and Kate (his 2nd wife) was with son Will, living on Widmerpool Lane, Keyworth. His occupation is given as Check Weighman. The addresses the family lived at in Bulwell are : 1881 - 15 Chatham Street, 1891 - 7 Clarges Street, 1901 - 2 Henrietta StreetHenry's second wife Kate died in 1924 and Henry remarried his 3rd wife Mary Hough the same year. Henry died in April 1938 aged 83 where he now lived back at Bulwell at 94 Repton Road.

On the 1901 Bulwell census Isaac is aged 8, and in 1911 Isaac is stayling with his sister Mary Jane in at 45 Logan Street, Bulwell and his occupation is Coal Mine Driver - Horse.

Isaac Orme Sergeant  L/8172 Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery 'B' Battery 152nd Brigade. Isaac's death was as a result of a accident which occurred on 4th May 1917, whilst he was resting and not in front line action. The cause was an old partially buried ammunition fuze was accidentally kicked and exploded, wounding Isaac and 4 other soldiers. Isaac died from his wounds on May 11th 1917 aged 24. He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Inscription on the family headstone, Northern Cemetery, Bulwell, Nottingham: 'In loving memory of Ruth wife of Henry Orme who fell asleep in Jesus June 16th 1904 aged 52 years.  Also Sergeant Isaac Orme the youngest beloved son of the above who died of wounds in France on May 11th 1917 aged 24 years. Also Henry Orme who died April 8th 1938 aged 83 years. Reunited & at rest.'

Nottingham Evening Post, ‘Roll of Honour’, 17 May 1917: ‘Orme. Died of wounds on May 11th 1917, Sergeant Isaac Orme, RFA, age 24, the youngest and beloved son of Mr H Orme, Keyworth (late of Bulwell). We could not stand beside you to hear your last farewell, and not a word of comfort from those who loved you well. From his sorrowing father and ma [Kate], fiancée, sisters and brothers (Will in France).

Isaac's brother Will served in the Army Service Corps and was in France by 1915 at the same time as Isaac. He was still serving in France when Isaac died in May 1917. Will was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. 

Orme Grove is named in his honour at the housing estate at Spinners Croft on Station Road/Platt Lane, Keyworth.
