The platypus, sometimes referred to as the duck-billed platypus, is a semiaquatic, egg-laying mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania.Platypuses occur in freshwater systems from tropical rainforest lowlands and plateaus of far northern Queensland to cold, high altitudes of Tasmania and the Australian Alps. They feed in both slow-moving and rapid (riffle) parts of streams, but show preference to coarser bottom substrates, particularly cobbles and gravel.
Camden Council is keeping a close eye on the animal that inspired their mascot, since early 2021 commenced the Platypus Monitoring Program.
The program uses environmental DNA technology that picks up on traces of DNA left behind by every living creature through their skin cells, fur, hair and scats, to help determine the presence of platypus at six sites along the Nepean River.
When platypuses were first discovered in 1798, British scientists thought they were a hoax created by combining parts of different animals together – webbed feet and a bill like a duck, a body like an otter and a tail like a beaver. But the joke was on them, the platypus is real and it is awesome!
