Geocache Description:

The Earth Science Lesson

Logging Tasks

The Earth Science Lesson

Morioka Castle was built on granite, and the exposed granite was also used for the stone walls. Here, we will learn about granite.

Granite

Granite is a type of intrusive rock that forms when magma slowly cools deep underground. It contains about 10% dark-colored minerals such as biotite, but its main components are quartz and feldspar, giving it an overall whitish appearance.

Location of Morioka Castle and Granite

Morioka Castle was built on a naturally formed granite rock mass.

At the GZ (Ground Zero), you can observe granite exposed from the ground being used directly in the stone walls.

Let’s take a look at a geological map.

Also, the “Ishiwarizakura” (rock-splitting cherry tree) in front of the Family Court grew by splitting a granite boulder.

Logging Tasks

Please send answers to the following questions to the cache owner (atsu_7). You may log without waiting for a reply. Photos taken at the GZ are also welcome.

Observe the granite at the GZ. Many parts are dirty, so try to find areas near the bottom where you can see the crystals more clearly.

  1. Observe the crystal grains. What colors do you see? Approximately how many types are there?
  2. Granite is said to be highly durable as a building stone. What properties of granite do you think contribute to this durability?
