Actually, it's a bit more than just a hole - this helped to turn nearby swampland into useful farmland for the local area. The location appealed to the engineers in us - a monumental expression of man's ability to transform the landscape for his own purposes.
Please be careful if you have kiddies or pets along for the visit - there's no fence along the edge, and it's an awfully long way to the bottom
