Geocache Description:

This cache is part of an occasional series about Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

I volunteer in a 2nd grade classroom, helping prepare the students for STEM (and other) careers. Mostly I get to teach them math, though I also end up doing the proverbial “whatever else needs to be done” so I’ve touched science, reading, social studies, art and perhaps something else.

Last week the 2nd graders were learning about biographies. Each student had to choose who to write about, then do research (ie, read abut the person they are writing about) and write at least two paragraphs about the person they choose.

I was delighted to learn that one child chose to write about Amelia Earhart. I was amused that another student who was typing the story on a computer (most students were writing by hand) referred to a correction from the spelling and grammar checker as “the AI wanted me to do this.” And -- not related to the biography assignment --  I was pleased to overhear one of the kids asking friends about their usernames for an online game.

I don’t know who the other students were writing about….but I’m sure they were reaching for the stars. Indeed, that’s what you’ll be doing at this cache. And if you’re so inclined, share something in your log about a child being exposed to STEM.

The location is probably not the Fountain of Knowledge. You’ll have to cross at least one street, and the nearest non-commercial parking is at a street to the east that does not have a traffic light.
