About this Cache: Thomas Paine
Thomas Paine, born on January 29, 1737, in Thetford, England, was a political philosopher and writer whose works inspired American colonists to seek independence. Paine's pamphlet "Common Sense," published in 1776, was a powerful and persuasive argument for breaking away from British rule. His writings galvanized public support for the revolution and articulated the principles of individual rights and self-governance. Paine also contributed to the revolutionary cause through his later works, including "The American Crisis," which boosted the morale of the Continental Army. Although he never held public office, Paine's contributions to the ideological foundation of the United States were profound.
