Llanwnda station originally opened as a halt on the horse-drawn, narrow-gauge Nantlle Railway named 'Pwllheli Road'. The line through Pwllheli Road was used to transport slate from the quarries to Caernarfon, but was later upgraded to form part of the standard-gauge Caernarvonshire Railway, running between Caernarfon and Afon Wen. The station was renamed Llanwnda Railway Station in 1877 before being closed in the 1960s along with the rest of the line. The trackbed now forms part of the Lôn Las Eifion cycle route, but the site of the station building now lies beneath the roundabout visible from GZ.
