Psephology - the study of elections and voting.

  • Derived from the Ancient Greek word psephos, meaning a small pebble.
In the earliest form of voting, voters would put a pebble in the ballot box.

Welcome to the Australian Electoral Voting System.

In order to win Government, a political party must win the majority of the seats (also known as divisions or electorates) in the House of Representatives (lower house).

Each electorate is generally contested by a number of candidates from various political parties.

At the polling booth, all candidates for that electorate are listed on the green ballot paper and voters must number them in order of their preference. This is called preferential voting, and all boxes must be numbered for the vote to be considered legitimate (formal).

THE PUZZLE

During an election campaign, the candidates (or their supporters) will hand out their How to Vote cards, which show how they would like you to order your preferences when you vote.

In real life, voters may number their ballot papers according to their own preferences. However, for the purposes of this puzzle, assume 100% compliance with party preferences.

THE CACHE

Using the information given in the cache page, determine the distribution of preferences according to how the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission) counts votes for the House of Representatives. No tricks or hidden ciphers involved.

Once you have correctly distributed the preferences, use the geochecker to get further information. Please note that your solved coordinates are for the first waypoint, not for the final cache.

WHY REVISITED?

Psepho-Logical - GC7YT73 - was a mystery cache by Bend Sinister. It was archived in July 2022, however permission has been kindly granted (and encouragement given) to reproduce the puzzle concept here.

Thank you also to FUF009 who has created the cache containers for this puzzle.

Note: The checker above will still record red for a correct solve of the puzzle, as it is for the first waypoint, not for the final cache GZ. If used again for GZ co-ords it will go green, however it is more for reassurance than necessity once out in the field.
