Geocache Description:

Are Pelicans Endangered?
Pelicans are, for the most part, classified as Least Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The IUCN looks at many factors when they determine whether or not a species is at risk, such as human encroachment, habitat destruction, and how much they are being affected by changes in climate. For most species of pelican, the IUCN believes these factors are not causing enough of a decline in their population to put them at risk.
However, that's not the case for all species of pelican. Some species, like the spot-billed pelican and the Dalmatian pelican are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Their numbers have fallen dramatically in the past few decades for a variety of factors like those listed above.
Thankfully, though, conservation efforts are turning the tide. Numbers of many species of pelican are recovering. Even better than that, with some species like the brown and Peruvian pelicans, their numbers have increased to the point where they are no longer classed as Threatened and have been removed from the IUCNs Red List.
That doesn't mean they're completely safe, but it's good news and a huge step in the right direction for Pelicans.
