Welcome to my Earthcache! An Earthcache is a special type of geocache where there is no container to find - instead you are looking for a unique geological feature of the area and need to answer questions, as well as posting a picture, in order to claim the find.
1. Piers, Water Levels, and Weather Impacts
Piers along D’Olive Bay serve as vital access points for fishing, boating, and wildlife observation. These structures are subject to fluctuating water levels influenced by tides, rainfall, and storm events. Severe weather, such as tropical storms and hurricanes, can cause significant damage to piers through storm surges and high winds. For instance, in April 2021, a severe weather event in Baldwin County resulted in minor cosmetic damage to multiple piers due to strong winds and elevated water levels. National Weather Service
2. Ecological Importance of D’Olive Bay
D’Olive Bay is a crucial component of the Mobile Bay estuarine system, providing habitat for diverse aquatic and terrestrial species. The bay receives freshwater inflow from D’Olive Creek, Tiawasee Creek, and Joe’s Branch, creating a brackish environment that supports various life forms, including fish nurseries and bird habitats . The surrounding wetlands and riparian zones play a significant role in filtering pollutants, trapping sediments, and mitigating flood impacts, thereby maintaining the ecological balance of the region. 3. Shoreline Erosion and Preventative Measures
Shoreline erosion in D’Olive Bay is primarily driven by wave action, boat wakes, and storm surges, leading to the loss of land and habitat degradation. To combat this, various erosion control measures have been implemented:
-
Riprap Revetments: Placement of large rocks along the shoreline to absorb and dissipate wave energy, thereby reducing erosion .
-
Living Shorelines: Use of native vegetation and natural materials to stabilize the shoreline, enhance habitat, and improve water quality.
These methods not only protect the shoreline but also preserve the natural aesthetics and ecological functions of the bay.
FOR THIS EARTHCACHE:
Answer and complete the following below. Order does not matter. Please send me a message or click the "answer question" button after selecting log. Do NOT post your answers.
1. Observe all the new and old piers. What has the water levels and weather conditions caused to happen to some of these piers?
2. What is the name of the bay the boat launch is located in? How does it compare to Mobile Bay?
3. What have the waves caused to happen to the shoreline and what preventive measures are currently being taken?
4. Take a picture of anywhere around the location, you CAN attach this to your log.
