Geocache Description:


Welcome to my Earthcache! An Earthcache is a special type of geocache where there is no container to find - instead you are looking for a unique geological feature of the area and need to answer questions, as well as posting a picture, in order to claim the find.

Constructed in 1885, the Middle Bay Lighthouse stands as a testament to maritime history in Mobile Bay. This hexagonal, screw-pile lighthouse was designed to guide vessels through the bay's shallow and sometimes treacherous waters. Built on iron pilings screwed into the bay floor, it withstood numerous hurricanes and storms over the decades. Automated in 1935 and deactivated in 1967, the lighthouse remains a historical landmark, reflecting the engineering ingenuity of the late 19th century.

3. Accessibility and Impact of Watercraft

The Middle Bay Lighthouse is accessible only by watercraft, each affecting the surrounding environment differently:

  • Boats: Traditional motorboats create wakes that can contribute to shoreline erosion and disturb sediment around the lighthouse's foundation.

  • Jet Skis: Their high speed and maneuverability can lead to increased water turbulence, potentially impacting nearby aquatic habitats.

  • Kayaks/Canoes: These non-motorized vessels have minimal environmental impact, making them ideal for eco-friendly exploration.

  • Airboats: Designed for shallow waters, airboats can navigate areas inaccessible to other vessels but may disrupt wildlife due to their noise and airflow.

1. Based on your visit, describe the wave or current activity around the lighthouse. How might these movements influence sediment transport in this  part of Mobile Bay?
2. While sediment may not be visible, what can you infer from the water’s color, clarity, or motion about erosion or deposition occurring beneath the structure? If your watercraft has a motor, you can see the sediment being mixed and moved. 
3. Refrencing back to the end of question two, What type of watercraft did you use to reach the site? Did it create wakes or noticeable water disturbance? How might repeated use of similar watercraft affect sediment in the area over time?
4. Take a picture of anywhere around the location, you CAN attach this to your log.
