In 1904, sick chestnut trees were discovered in New York City. Within 40 years, an estimated 4 billion American chestnuts were dead, killed by a disease called Chestnut Blight. This fungal infection caused the near extinction of one of the dominant trees in North America and fundamentally altered our forest ecosystems. Chestnut Blight fungus arrived here in imported Japanese chestnut trees, highlighting the importance of planting native plants rather than exotic ones.
