Wusi Guangchang (May Fourth Square) is a landmark public square in Qingdao, China, located in the Shinan District along Donghai West Road, near Fushan Bay and adjacent to the Qingdao Municipal Government building.
It was built in 1996 to commemorate the May Fourth Movement of 1919—a patriotic and cultural reform movement sparked by opposition to the Treaty of Versailles, which transferred German privileges in Shandong to Japan. The movement played a significant role in modern Chinese history.
The most prominent feature of the square is a large red spiral sculpture named “May Wind” (五月的风), standing 30 meters tall and 27 meters in diameter, weighing over 500 tons. It symbolizes the passionate patriotism and pursuit of modernization reflected in the May Fourth Movement.
The square consists of three parts: the Civic Square, the Central Square, and the Coastal Park. Its design combines local Qingdao characteristics with modern urban aesthetics. It is surrounded by high-rise buildings and offers views of the sea, making it a popular spot for both tourists and locals to walk, relax, and enjoy the scenery.
Nearby attractions include the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center (used during the 2008 Beijing Olympics), as well as various shopping and dining options. At night, the square lights up beautifully, with the sculpture especially striking under illumination—making it a highlight of Qingdao’s cityscape.
