Fontanna została zaprojektowana przez Józefa Orłowskiego i Alfonsa Grotowskiego. Autorem bogatego wystroju rzeźbiarskiego trzonu fontanny był Leonard Marconi, którego dzieło odlane zostało w żeliwie. Rzeźby przedstawiają grupę chłopców trzymających sieć rybacką. Poza tym jeden z nich ma w rękach rybę, drugi wiosło, a trzeci torbę sieciową. W 1872 roku metalowe rybki trzymane przez jednego z chłopców zostały skradzione.
W 1866 roku fontanna została ustawiona na skwerze przy Krakowskim Przedmieściu, nieopodal kościoła Karmelitów Bosych. Zdemontowano ją w 1897 roku, a na jej miejscu w 1898 roku odsłonięto pomnik Adama Mickiewicza.
W 1910 roku odsłonięto ją na trójkątnym skwerze znajdującym się w południowej części placu Bankowego gdzie przetrwała obie Wojny Światowe i cudem uniknęła zniszczenia.
Po zakończeniu II Wojny Światowej została zdemontowana i odrestaurowana pod kierownictwem Zygmunta Stępińskiego. Odsłonięto ją ponownie w 1952 na skwerze Batalionu AK „Wigry” gdzie stoi do dzisiaj.
