Geocache Description:

Lunenburg Armillary Sphere

An armillary sphere is an astronomical instrument that models the celestial sphere and its apparent motion, primarily used to visualize and understand the movements of the sun, stars, and planets around a stationary Earth. It was a crucial tool for astronomers and also served as a teaching aid and a decorative object.

It was invented separately, in ancient China possibly as early as the 4th century BC and ancient Greece during the 3rd century BC, with later uses in the Islamic world and Medieval Europe.

Armillary spheres were used to determine sunrise and sunset times, the length of a day, and the altitude of the sun or stars. The instrument could be used to establish celestial coordinates, such as latitude and longitude.
