Geocache Description:

SEMAG #124 - Flag Day in Fall River

Town: Fall River

Date: June 14th

Event Time: 10 A.M. - 12 P.M.

Additional Info: There have been 123 consecutive months of Southeast Massachusetts Geocaching events, and for the first time, we're headed to the largest and most historic park in the second largest city in Bristol County. It's a bit eye-opening to think the SEMAG rotation has only been to Fall River once, and that was back in 2018. So what better way to celebrate Flag Day than to come to Kennedy Park, named after Massachusetts favorite son and the nation's 35th president. The Pavilion  provides fantastic views of the bay to the west and St. Anne's Church to the east.

Back in 1862, this section of Fall River was once a part of Rhode Island. Built in 1868, designed by famed 19th century landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the park was originally known as "South Park". It was updated in 1904 by the Olmsted Brothers. The park was renamed in 1963 following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The park once hosted 25,000 people to see President Clinton make a campaign stop here in 1996. An Inclusion playground opened in 2014 for children with disabilities.
