Welcome to the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC)
We’re excited to share this geocache with you and hope it sparks curiosity about the Mississippi River and the ecosystems that surround it.
A special thank you to Girl Scout Troop 325 for creating this cache and for their continued partnership over the years.
-
The Field Station meets the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standard, showing how intentional building design can reduce environmental impact and inspire a deeper connection with nature.
-
The Jerry F. Costello Confluence Field Station is designed to resemble the local landscape, with a winding path that leads to a green roof. This living rooftop is planted with native hill prairie species that provide habitat for wildlife.
-
The Solatube® skylights you’ll see on the rooftop bring natural light into the building, supporting energy efficiency and sustainability.
-
The Field Station is home to research teams studying great rivers and their watersheds—focusing on state-threatened species, wetland health, nutrient dynamics, and emerging contaminants throughout the Mississippi River watershed.
-
The education team here works with learners of all ages through workshops, student programs, research experiences, and community events, helping people build a personal connection to our river systems.
