The world is full of morons. Why did they do it?

In late September 2023, during a stormy night, two men — Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers — cut down the iconic Sycamore Gap Tree in Northumberland National Park. The tree, over 150 years old and featured in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, was one of England’s most beloved landmarks. Digital evidence, including a grainy video showing the act and GPS data from Graham’s Range Rover, tied the men to the scene. The jury at Newcastle Crown Court convicted both of criminal damage, despite their claims of innocence and attempts to blame each other.
The motive remains unclear, though prosecutors suggested it was done “for a laugh” — a mindless act of vandalism with no real gain. The tree’s destruction shocked people around the world and sparked outrage across the UK. The men exchanged bragging messages the next day as the story went viral. Prosecutors believe the two took a wedge of the tree trunk as a trophy, though the chainsaw was never found. The tree was valued at over £620,000, and both men now face a possible 10-year prison sentence, with sentencing scheduled for July 15, 2025.
But still, the question remains: why?
Why destroy something so beautiful, so symbolic?
Was it arrogance? Boredom? A desperate stunt for attention?
Or just the result of two men with tools and no sense?

It went through phases: Clean – Dirty – Clean – Dirty... and now? Let’s say reasonably clean. But the season just started.
