You are in the centre of Kiti village here, restaurants, shops, petrol station etc are only a short walk or quick drive away.
The full name of this beautiful Byzantine church is Holy Church of the Virgin Mary - Panagia tis Angeloktisti, Angeloktistii meaning 'build by the angels'. It's one of the oldest churches in Cyprus and very famous for it's mosaics.
It dates from the 11th century and was erected over the ruins of an Early Christian basilica of the 5th century. Some parts of the old church have survived and have ben incorporated into the 11th century church that can be visited today.
The original apse of the basilica has survived along with one of the finest pieces of Byzantine art on the island – a rare 6th century mosaic of the Virgin Mary and Child between the two archangels Michael and Gabriel.
The church is currently listed on the list of Tentative UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is surrounded by a beautiful park with a fountain and a 600 (?) year old Mastic tree.
