Wormley Free Church started off from unusual origins. In 1834, three bible students from Cheshunt arranged an open air bible service in Wormley but were then told by the local police that they would be locked up if they proceeded to hold this service and the local constable proceeded to take down the names of the people who attended. At court the students presented a case where open air preaching had been allowed in Berkshire and consequently won the right to preach in Wormley. A chapel was then later built at the top of Slipe Lane in 1860 and extensions were added in 1994 and 1996 to accommodate growing numbers. The free church has regular services here and at the local community centre; and has expanded locally into Cheshunt.
