One of the things I miss most about living in Ohio is the number of traveling fairs and carnivals that came through my area. Traveling fairs just don't seem to be that popular of a thing here in the mitten state. Interestingly enough, my favorite part of those traveling fairs are two specific carnival rides: Gravitron and the Zipper. Nothing is more exhilarating than stepping foot on a "who knows when this was last inspected" death contraption operated by someone who probably didn't even finish high school. Regardless, the Gravitron and the Zipper were the building blocks of why I'm still a thrill seeker today.
If you aren't familiar with these two rides, read on and I'll tell you all about them! I guess I'll start by saying that the pedestrian ferris wheel or mirror maze simply aren't thrilling enough for me. Stepping foot on the Gravitron is a little bit like boarding a spaceship, except instead of little green men, there's a guy controlling the lights and music on a touchscreen TV. The Gravitron spins you around so fast you end up sticking to the wall of the ride due to the effects of centrifugal force. As your ride increases spin to up to 40rpm, everything gets all jumbled and chaotic. Just when you think things can't get any worse you head over to the Zipper which is effectively a ferris wheel on steroids. The ride has steel cages that ride a pulley around a center beam and the center beam itself is also spinning; all of a sudden up is down and down is up! Everything in your brain is scrambled and you don't know if you're at the beginning or at the end.
There's just one more thing I wanted to mention that you can never forget about these pop-up carnivals and their clanky buckets of rust. One thing that goes along with these death contraptions is the concessions; greasy, deep fried treats...mmmm, I can almost taste the....
