Mega EcoPorto Celebrating 25 years of Geocaching and 22 years of CITO in Season 2 of 2025
Geocaching is an outdoor activity that combines technology, adventure, and exploration. It involves searching for hidden containers, known as “geocaches”, using GPS coordinates published online. Since its beginning in 2000, Geocaching has grown into a global community, with millions of geocaches placed across continents. In 2025, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of this initiative, marking a quarter-century of discovery, sharing, and connection with nature and people from around the world.

"Cache In Trash Out" is an ecological initiative driven by the geocaching community since 2003. During CITO events, participants help preserve and improve the environment through litter cleanups, tree planting, or maintenance of trails and natural habitats. These activities promote civic values, appreciation of nature, and group collaboration, forming a strong sense of community among participants. In 2025, the second season of CITO events marks the 22nd anniversary of this important aspect of Geocaching, highlighting the community’s commitment to environmental preservation.

Adventure Park & Ecological Trail The main stage of the celebrations in Geocaching mode
The former Ermesinde / Baguim do Monte Sanitary Landfill, covering about 19 hectares, which received much of the waste produced in various Porto municipalities since the 1970s, has been transformed into the Adventure Park. Once a dump, now a garden. The old Lipor landfill was sealed, became an adventure park in 2009, and gained an ecological trail in 2017. Open daily from 08:00 to 20:00, everyone can use this space for walking and physical activities. Along the trail, we can discover the biodiversity of the Rio Tinto, see an installation by the artist Bordalo II, and appreciate various natural engineering structures used for watercourse rehabilitation. The site includes recreational, leisure, and educational areas available to the public.
The Geocaching activities throughout the weekend will be supported by Lipor and will take place throughout the venue. It is the perfect location to celebrate both 25 years of Geocaching and 22 years of environmental initiatives.
