Why Frogs Matter !
Australia has over 250 known species of frog, almost all of which are found nowhere else in the world. Some species are flourishing, like the Striped Marsh Frog. But others have declined dramatically since the 1980s, and at least four have become extinct.
Frogs play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. As environmental indicators, they provide early warnings about changes in environmental health.
The Australian Museum's supports a national citizen science project that is helping learn more about what is happening to Australia’s frogs. All around the country, people are recording frog calls with the free app for frog call experts to listen and verify.
The project relies on frog calls to identify species, as many frog species are indistinguishable by appearance, we want to minimise disturbance to frogs and their habitat, and we want to know about the breeding season and breeding habitats of frogs.
