Geocache Description:

The Oued Guigou is a wadi in Morocco's Middle Atlas Mountains. The region around the Oued Guigou wadi offers a varied landscape and the opportunity to discover rock types typical of a mountain river in the Middle Atlas. The Oued Guigou is a product of the interaction of rift formation, volcanism and erosion in the Middle Atlas. The region combines sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and limestone, volcanic deposits from the Tertiary period and striking karst landscapes.

Geological development

The Middle Atlas is a mountain range in Morocco that is around 500 km long and part of the Atlas Mountains. It was formed during the Alpine orogeny, with tectonic movements, uplift and erosion shaping the landscape we see today. Here, there is a complex sequence of layers from the Palaeozoic to the Quaternary periods:

  • Palaeozoic rocks: The bedrock contains some old crystalline rocks such as gneisses, quartzites and granitoids.
  • Mesozoic sediments: During the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, thick layers of limestone, dolomite and sandstone were deposited on top, which are now exposed in many places.
  • Tertiary volcanic rocks and sediments: The Tertiary period saw intense volcanic activity, which led to basaltic cover layers and tuff deposits. In valleys such as the Oued Guigou, young basalts are found overlying Tertiary and Jurassic sediments.
  • Quaternary deposits: The river landscape of the Oued Guigou is characterised by alluvial sediments such as scree, sandy loam and currently deposited river gravel.

Wadi is the name given to dry valleys in the desert regions of North Africa, the Middle East and parts of Spain and Cyprus. There are also river courses that have been dry for decades in the desert regions of Australia and southern Africa, as well as in North and South America. They often run along tectonic weak zones and trench structures. The Oued Guigou lies within such a geological zone. The erosive power of water, in combination with tectonics, has created deep valleys and smaller side trenches that define the current relief. The river valley partly follows old rift structures and is framed by basalt, limestone and marl. Wadis can be impassable rocky valleys only a few metres wide or flat riverbeds several kilometres wide. They may carry water permanently or only be flooded over large areas during extremely rare storms. Wadis often appear dry, but the water flows in the porous sedimentary or karst rock underground and, depending on the amount of water carried, emerges at different points on the surface to form oases. Trees, shrubs and palm trees are indicators of such underground watercourses.

Typical rock types at Oued Guigou

Limestone Formed in warm, shallow seas during the Mesozoic era, it now forms striking rock formations, karst landscapes and karren fields along the Middle Atlas.
Sandstone These rocks originate mainly from the Triassic and Jurassic periods; they form steep slopes that are susceptible to erosion, as well as large scree slopes and sandbanks along the river course.
Basalt Young basaltic lava flows from Tertiary volcanic phases cover parts of the valleys in places; they are recognisable by their dark colour and blocky structure.
Loam and alluvial sediments Sandy-loamy sediments predominate along the river itself, which are mobilised and deposited seasonally by high water or flooding.
Carbonate rocks In addition to limestone, dolomite and, in some cases, marl are found, which often contain fossils and indicate former marine deposits.

Geological processes and special features

Erosion and karst formation: Heavy rainfall and the alternation of dry and rainy seasons cause intense erosion. The karst landscapes with sinkholes and small caves particularly characterise the landscape around the Oued Guigou.

Volcanism: The young basalt layers bear witness to an active geological past in the Tertiary period, when there were intense volcanic eruptions in the Middle Atlas.

Fossils: Fossils are frequently found in Jurassic limestone, even though the most famous sites are located slightly further south in the Atlas Mountains.

Faults: The region is also characterised by numerous faults and fractures running in a north-east to south-west direction, which strongly structure the landscape.
