Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates! This is a multi cache, with the first four stages all virtual (see waypoint coordinates) and the only container at the final. The coordinates for the final are N 42° 03.ABC W 104° 57.DEF.

Stage 1: The first building in Wheatland is long gone. The oldest building in town is before you. This originally stood a few feet to the east at the corner and provided offices for the Wyoming Development Company. That company was formed in 1883 to construct an irrigation system for the nearby Wheatland Flats, critical for agricultural use of the area.

There is an historical plaque on the front of the building. A = the last digit of the year built.

Stage 2: Facing south, the brick house across the street was built in 1894 as the home and office of Wheatland's first doctor, David Rigdon. His wife, Molly, ran the first library from here as well until 1901. The two-story building to the left was built in 1908 and served briefly as a hospital and later as quarters for women attending a training school for nurses in the 1920s. Behind you, the brick building was completed in 1934 by the Works Progress Administration as a Post Office. It is now City Hall.

There is a commemorative bell near your position in front of City Hall. B = the number of letters in the town of manufacture, minus 4.

Still with the bell, there is a single year on the reverse (behind the company name). Subtract the digit on the front between the name and town of manufacture from the second digit of that year. This is C.

Stage 3: The courthouse was built in 1917/18 for $60,000 after Wheatland was designated the county seat. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an excellent example of early twentieth-century Neo-Classical Revival architecture.

There is a benchmark embedded in the wall to the left of the front steps. D = the first digit following the "G" in the middle of the disk.

Below the mark is a rock with a plaque commemorating the Platte County centennial. Add the final two digits of the centennial year. This is E.

Stage 4: The Bucking Horse & Rider is a trademark for both the state of Wyoming and the University of Wyoming. Steamboat was a famous rodeo horse from this area in the early twentieth century and he is regarded as the inspiration for the trademark image. This was his barn when he wasn't traveling the rodeo circuit.

The plaque on the barn celebrates the centennial of the Town of Wheatland. F = the sum of the digits of that centennial year.

Checksum for answers A through F = 36. The final is located at N 42° 03.ABC W 104° 57.DEF.

I hope you have enjoyed these glimpses into the history of Wheatland.
