Rails of Pinecrest - Junction
The steep and narrow Emigration Canyon served the Mormons as the entrance to the City of Zion. Later from its rocky wallks came most of the red and white colored Nugget sandstone which built Salt Lake City. The heavy rocks were halued on mule wagons. The wagon wheels were custom built to handle the weight.
Emigration Canyon Railroad Company was organized in 1907. The built a 14 mile narrow gauge electric railway. It had several spurs to the carries. ECRC refurbished former trolley cars into flatbad freight cars. First the company was in trouble: it was too costly to operate.
One day the owner discovered that the wagons often carried hitchhikers. He decided to diversify and invested into four passenger cars. They were painted Pullman green with a gold trim and plush interior. Tickets were around 50 cents. The trains up above the timber line reaching the summit of Point Lookout (Lookout Peak). A 75 room lodge was built at Pinecrest. Summer cottages were also built (prices were between $250 and $6000).

Most cars originated from the company's yard at 5th South and University. Some sightseeing trains run from Hotel Utah to the ECRC railyards and toward Wagner Brewery and up to Pinecrest. The grade was 5.5% but the last mile to Pinecrest boasted a constant 8% grade.
At this point the old railroad line went up to White Quarry (on today's Miners's trail) and a spur line followed the Pinecrest canyon
