IMPORTANT - This rest area is only accessible to southbound travelers. Although there are no restroom facilities, it’s a great spot for a rest, picnic, and some fresh, Appalachian air.
As you roll into wild and wonderful Mercer County, take a moment to pause and play. Tucked just off I-77 Southbound, this clever cache is more than just a container — it’s a handcrafted tribute to the roads, towns, and charm of this Appalachian gem. From Flat Top to Bluefield, from winding highways to mountain trails, Mercer is full of paths waiting to be discovered… starting right here.
At GZ, you’ll spot what looks like a humble birdhouse, but don’t be fooled. This isn’t for the birds — it’s for the bold. Engraved with a map of Mercer County, its highways and a few hometown names, this little landmark might reveal its secrets… or it might just mislead you.
The cache is in plain sight, but opening it? That’s another story.
Do you twist this? Pull that? Is a tool needed, or just a little Appalachian ingenuity? There are a few red herrings tucked in to keep you guessing. Keep your eyes sharp and your hands busy — and don’t be afraid to think outside the box (or birdhouse).
There’s space for small swag, so feel free to trade — and for one lucky early bird, there’s a handcrafted FTF wooden token waiting inside. BYOP.
This cache is meant to welcome all who pass through Mercer County with a bit of fun and a hint of mystery. Please return everything as you found it so the next traveler can enjoy the challenge, too.
Happy caching, and welcome to our corner of the Mountain State!
