Geocache Description:

This Boat Ramp can be busy on some days and very quiet on others, so plan your trip accordingly.

The Hamilton Reservoir in Holland, MA, was created in the 1860s when the Hamilton Woolen Company dammed the Quinebaug River to power their mills in Southbridge. The original dam was located a short distance east of Holland's center. In 1955, a flood caused the dam to fail, leading to the construction of the current dam in 1956.

Here's a more detailed look:

  • Early Purpose:

The dam was built by the Hamilton Woolen Company to create a reservoir that would provide a reliable water supply for their textile mills in Southbridge.

  • Creation of the Reservoir:

The damming of the Quinebaug River created Hamilton Reservoir, also known as Hamilton Lake or Holland Lake.

  • 1955 Flood:

A significant flood in 1955 caused the original dam to break, leading to widespread flooding in Holland.

  • Current Dam:

The present dam was constructed in 1956 to replace the damaged structure.
