About Ron O'Brien

Ron O’Brien, an extremely influential figure in the world of competitive diving, passed away in November 2024 at the age of 86. Over the course of his career, he served as the head coach for the U.S. Olympic diving team at eight consecutive Games, from 1968 through 1996. His athletes secured 12 Olympic medals (five gold, three silver, and four bronze), highlighting his unparalleled coaching. O’Brien’s influence extended beyond the Olympics as he also coached at seven World Cups, seven World Championships, and four Pan American Games, guiding divers to numerous titles and setting a standard for excellence in the sport.

Beyond his coaching achievements, O’Brien was a mentor who shaped the lives of his athletes. His legacy includes the induction into multiple Hall of Fames, such as the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame, the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and the Ohio State University Sports Hall of Fame.
