Dutch "New Herring" is only available in June. Nevertheless, you can eat a herring all year long. When you visit the Netherlands make sure to hop into one of our fish stores and eat a fresh herring. This delicacy is called “Hollandse Nieuwe”. Some say a new herring tastes heavenly like an angel walking over your tongue. The taste of a fresh herring cannot be compared to anything. It is soft, slightly salty, and above all it is fresh. Dutch fresh Herring is a big thing but one loves it or hates it.
Here are a few herring pictures, and how it is typically consumed. Of course there are easier ways to do this, but why should we?
Now on to the geocache.
There is a lot to say and learn about herring. From a long, long, long list of fishy herring facts found on the trustworthy internet (cough, cough), I chose a select few to create this mystery cache. You should be able to answer all of these without having to fish around on the internet as long as you keep the above fishy pictures in perspective and apply some logic. If you visited an aquarium (a place to observe fish, and where they feed herring to otters) in the past or watched a few fishy movies here or there you should be able to pick the right answer by virtue of deduction. Some school teacher once told me "the answer in multiple choice is either C or the longest answer. Sometimes it is C and the longest". I did pass tests but rarely with flying colors. My school teacher was a fishy person. So here we go. Determine the answers and then put your fishy results in the checker in alphabetical order.

A. hundreds of thousands and always less than millions, especially in warmer water
B. millions
C. billions

2) Females release quite a few eggs into the water, which then get externally fertilized by males. How many eggs does a typical 8-year old female release into cold water?
A. around 5,000 in cold water and up to 9,000 in warmer water. These eggs tend to be on the larger side.
B. 10,000 to 20,000, if she is about 10 inches long, typically

D. well over 50,000, towards 100,000 depending on what ocean or sea they release their eggs.
3) Fertilized eggs are very small, they fall to the bottom of the sea and attach to the stones and sea vegetation. What is the size of fertilized eggs?
A. like a micrometer: 0.001 mm, or about 0.000039 inches. super duper small.
B. on the macro scale, 0.0039 to .0055 inches ( .1 to .14 mm). super small.
C. just about 0.039 to 0.055 inches (1.0 to 1.4 mm). small.
D. 0.12 to .2 inches (3 to 5 mm). like pearls, not small.
