Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Beaufort Cemetery.

The traditional owners of the Beaufort area are the Wadawurrung Indigenous Australians and we pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Early European settlers arrived in the late 1830s, but as with many other Victorian towns, it was the discovery of gold that brought the masses.

A small amount of gold was discovered in 1852 in the nearby Yam Holes Creek, followed by larger discoveries in the north towards Raglan over the next three years, the collective area being known as the Fiery Creek Diggings.

This Cemetery was originally known as the Yam Holes Cemetery, and the earliest burials here were recorded from 1856. It was renamed Beaufort Cemetery when the town was surveyed in 1857.

You may be interested to explore the Cemetery with two Adventure Labs that bring you to some interesting locations within the grounds.

You can also visit https://map.chronicle.rip/Beaufort_Cemetery which is an online map of each grave in the Cemetery.

Please be respectful of other visitors to the Cemetery and refrain from letting dogs or children run around unsupervised. We do not wish to lose the ability to have geocaches or labs placed here. Thank you.
