With the upcoming semiquincentennial (250-year) anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the American Colonies from Imperial British rule, I decided I should start a series of geocaches highlighting well known and lesser known parts of history regarding the American War of Independence.
Battle of Monmouth
This battle took place near modern-day West Freehold, New Jersey during the American War of Independence . General George Washington's Continental Army was following General Sir Henry Clinton's British force when it left Philadelphia in May 1778 to retreat to New York.
The Continental Army eventually caught up with the British at Monmouth on June 28, 1778, where it fought a long pitched battle in baking summer heat. The battle was a stalemate and the British were able to continue their march eastwards, but it showed that the Patriot army was becoming a formidable force under its French and Prussian instructors and was now able to engage British regulars on an equal footing.
The Battle of Monmouth includes the legend of Molly Pitcher taking the place of her fallen husband and assisting with the artillery.
What is the name of the woman attributed to be "Molly Pitcher" during the Battle of Monmouth?
