On July 5, 1943, Boise City was bombed by a B-17 bomber that had gotten off course and upon seeing the four lights at Boise City courthouse decided that it resembled their target at Conlen, Texas. Five bombs were dropped around the courthouse while the sixth one was dropped further southeast and is now on display. Each bomb contained four pounds of powder and ninety-six pounds of sand. Thankfully, no one was killed in the accident and the damage was minimal, but the pilots were very embarrassed.

Today, a caboose and marker sit in memory of the bombing. Eighty years later, Boise City remains the only US town to ever be bombed by the US military.

This should be a quick find. It's in a small container with room for swag. Permission has been granted by Kim Mizer of the Chamber of Commerce to hide this geocache.
