Geocache Description:

Avocet trail

The Avocet Trail is a peaceful walking path located on the southwestern edge of Atanasovsko Lake, a coastal lagoon known for its rich birdlife and unique salt marsh ecosystem. This area is especially important during the migration seasons, when thousands of birds stop here to rest and feed.

One of the most iconic species you can spot here is the pied avocet, a striking black-and-white wader with a long upturned bill. Along the trail, you’ll find informational boards describing the avocet's nesting habits, feeding behavior, and the role the lake plays in its life cycle.

In addition to avocets, the lake hosts over 300 species of birds, including flamingos, pelicans, shelducks, terns, and various sandpipers. Many of these are rare or endangered, and the lake is part of the European Natura 2000 network for habitat protection.

The area is managed for both conservation and eco-tourism. Wooden observation huts allow birdwatchers to observe wildlife without disturbance. The salt pans nearby also contribute to the habitat diversity and have been traditionally used for salt harvesting for over a century.

Whether you're a bird lover, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a quiet place to explore, this trail offers a unique view into one of Bulgaria's most valuable wetlands.
